Justice Is Vulnerable, We Must Be Resilient
Fall 2020 - Newsletter of the Federal Bar Association Northern District of Ohio
In the Fall 2020 Newsletter of the Federal Bar Association Northern District of Ohio, Chad Eggspuehler describes the tragedy that befell Federal Judge Esther Salas when a madman opened fire at her front door, claiming the life of her 20-year-old son and seriously injuring her husband. Chad reflected on his personal history as a young law clerk serving under Judge Salas (then a Magistrate Judge for Chad’s District Judge) and stressed the need for appropriate precautions to protect members of the judiciary.
After the article went to press, on November 20, 2020, New Jersey’s Governor Phil Murphy signed “Daniel’s Law” (A1649) to ‘protect[] the home addresses and telephone numbers of judges, prosecutors, and law enforcement officers.’ (Press release on Governor’s Signing, available here.)
