San Francisco Daily Journal Profiles Monica Monroe
February 2019
In its January 28 issue, the San Francisco Daily Journal profiled Monica Williams Monroe.
Monica, the first lawyer in her family, gave credit to mentors who helped her career get started. “When you are put into the hot seat and you do well and people get to see you, judges, and other lawyers, that catapults you,” she explained.
When asked for some words of wisdom for attorneys who are looking to move up in their ranks, Monica advised, “Set out your intentions and plan with clarity. Have a team of people who are mentors both inside and outside of your organization, who are sounding boards for you.”
And in addressing female attorneys, Monica encouraged them to make their voices heard. “A lot of times, as women, we find it hard to self-promote and that’s something I have had to work on,” she said. “People have encouraged me to speak up and raise my hand. When the time is right, definitely go for it and speak up so you do not lose out on an opportunity.”
Monica has great admiration for leaders who are communicative and are able to identify and resolve issues and cultivate talent. “A key leadership trait is the ability to identify the next leader and highlight and profile stars on the team to make the next wave successful,” she said. “Tucker Ellis has given me a diversity of opportunity.”
Asked what lies ahead for her in 2019, Monica replied that it’s an exciting time in California with many new laws and initiatives, including the state’s public health issues and recent laws that require publicly traded companies to include women on their boards.
Monica wrapped up the interview with her commitment to giving back, saying, “I’m also excited about community engagement and working with organizations that matter to our employees and clients.”
