Appellate Chair Ben Sassé to Receive OACTA Outstanding Advocacy Award
November 2019
Benjamin Sassé, chair of the Tucker Ellis Appellate & Legal Issues practice, will receive the “Outstanding Advocacy Award” at the 2019 Annual Meeting of the Ohio Association of Civil Trial Attorneys (OACTA). The award recognizes lawyers who, in the judgment of the OACTA Awards Committee, have distinguished themselves during the past year by outstanding advocacy in the trial or appellate courtroom. It is the only award that OACTA gives based on a member’s handling of a particular case. Mr. Sassé will receive the award for his outstanding advocacy and defense win in the Penniman v. University Hospitals appeal. He will accept the honor at the OACTA Legal Excellence Awards Luncheon on November 21.
Mr. Sassé has briefed appeals that upheld the constitutionality of several Ohio tort reform statutes and argued appeals establishing the standard for Ohio employment intentional tort claims, upholding the 365/360 method of interest accrual in Ohio, and clarifying the standard of review in zoning appeals and who has standing to file a treble damages action against public utilities. His experience as chair of OACTA’s Amicus Committee helps him frame legal issues for review by the Supreme Court of Ohio.
“Here at Tucker Ellis, we’re fortunate to have so many remarkable lawyers who consistently deliver great results for our clients,” said Tucker Ellis Managing Partner Joe Morford. “Ben stands out – not only for the work for which he’s being recognized, but in his extraordinary day-to-day practice in high-profile, important cases for our clients. We’re exceptionally proud of his accomplishments and congratulate him on this well-deserved honor.”
Mr. Sassé received his law degree magna cum laude from Case Western Reserve University School of Law and his undergraduate degree with honors from Earlham College.
